Sa Penya

Gritty gypsy barrio undergoing a gastro-renaissance

Tricky-to-navigate Sa Penya is Ibiza's original barrio gitano, a rough-and-ready froth of whitewashed backstreets tumbling to Ibiza Town's port. It's also home to some cool, offbeat restaurants – Japanese hole-in-the-wall Sushiya Aoyama, tiny Tuscan trattoria La Tana and the unbeatable Taller Sa Penya (see Upmarket Dining). There's plenty to drink, too – try the absinthe-laced Green Beast at Parisian-style Bar 1805 or sip a G&T on the rooftop of atmospheric Tira Palla, which overlooks the illuminated old town walls.

Top tip:

Don't be flash – petty street crime is not uncommon.
