A multicultural neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid

In the same way as Shoreditch, Brooklyn and Kreuzberg have been touched by gentrification over time, combining cultural diversity with a wave of new openings, the same is happening with Lavapiés. You’ll find cafés, upscale wine bars and great restaurants rubbing shoulders with more traditional Senegalese restaurants and Madrilenian tavernas. If it’s street food you’re after, try the San Fernando and Anton Martin markets, or one of the smaller restaurants on the back streets.

Top tip:

Our favourite streets are Calle Embajadores and Meson de Paredes, with the streets in between holding some great finds, as well as Calle Argumosa, which has more traditional bars and restaurants.
