Isola

Skyscrapers and renaissance churches layer up in this urban community

Isola, meaning ‘island’ in Italian, is exactly that: an urban island hemmed in by Garibaldi station and cut off by Corso Como and the Porta Nuova skyscrapers. Here, you’ll find a thriving community of local trattorie, vintage boutiques, delis and restaurants, as well as some of the city’s best hangouts (and Google’s Italian headquarters). It’s an area in flux, as the post-war factory worker neighbourhood now co-exists with skyscrapers, Art Nouveau apartments and an overriding bohemian sensibility.

Top tip:

Swing by the Blue Note club for unmissable jazz music while you’re in the area.
