Din Tai Fung

Famed soup dumplings

The migration of Taiwanese dumpling chain Din Tai Fung to London caused quite a stir, with queues of up to five hours to get inside the stripped back, expansive 250-cover restaurant. Thankfully things have died down since the opening, so if you happen to be in Covent Garden during off-peak hours, we say try your luck. It’s inexpensive, but the food is GOOD (branches in Macau and Hong Kong hold Michelin stars). Served to you by technicians in masks and overalls, each of their xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) takes 40 minutes to prepare by hand, and should be followed up by a compulsory helping of custard lava buns.

Top tip:

The queues are still long on evenings and weekends, so try it on a weekday afternoon post-lunch rush.
